Tu Casa Chef JohnRoss Woodland Wins Chopped Canada!

I’m a fan of Chopped; of the Food Network in general, really. And finding out that a local chef not only competed on the show but actually won was a thrill to a food geek like me, and to the many people at Tu Casa Fine Dining last night for the screening of the episode. The restaurant was packed with a mix of their regulars and media. I’m not exaggerating when I say packed—it was so full they actually had to turn people away!

spruce tipsJohnRoss’s judges on the show were celebrity chefs Roger Mooking, Lynn Crawford and Anne Yarymowich—an impressive roster—and pickled spruce tips were among the many, er, interesting ingredients he had to deal with. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, I don’t think most of us knew either. It’s the new growth of a twig off a spruce tree. Apparently, they’re edible. Who knew?

With every elimination, the crowd got louder and louder. By the time the final cut was made, we all suspected Woodland was going to win, but there’s always that tiny bit of doubt—and then he won! And his modesty made its presence felt—it almost seemed as though he was embarrassed by the well-deserved accolades, with an “aw shucks” expression on his face.

Lorne Park is beaming with pride for their local chef, now a Chopped champion. And big things are in the future for Tu Casa Fine Dining. Stay tuned!
