Pan Am Spirit Comes to Mississauga Through Art

Toronto-2015

In celebration of the TO2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games, local students from John Cabot Catholic Secondary School and Applewood Heights Secondary School will be painting columns at the Hershey Sports Complex this month. The murals will be painted to tie the games together with the people and culture of Mississauga. Featuring designs of activities that are normally offered at the Hershey Sports Complex such as fitness, soccer, gymnastics and basketball. This initiative is funded by the TO2015 Ignite Program.

The students will be painting the murals from April 14 – 17. On April 15, members of the community are invited to view the paintings in progress, engage with the artist and be part of history.

“The murals will give the venue that special touch and really tell the story of Mississauga’s rich and diverse culture, talent and pride.” said Anna Ferguson, City of Mississauga’s Beautification Programmer. “This is a unique opportunity to witness the making of a Pan Am legacy piece for the city.”

The City of Mississauga is one of 16 communities outside of Toronto that will be hosting the events for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.

The complex, located next to the Hershey Sports Centre or Mississauga Sports Centre (MIS); as it will be called for the Games, will be the official venue for the Pan Am sports of judo, karate, taekwondo and wrestling; as well as goal ball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby for the Parapan Am sports.

“This is a great way for young Mississauga artists to celebrate their passion for art through the Games,” said Ferguson. “The students will infuse their artistic talents with the Pan Am spirit to create a historic piece of art in the facility.”

The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games takes place from July 10 to 26, and the Parapan Am Games from August 7 to 15. The Games will welcome more than 10,000 athletes and officials from 41 countries.
